Biography

Hi, My name is Maria Hayes, from Queensland Australia. I have been researching my family history since I was about 14 yrs old. So approx 23 yrs.

I have been researching my paternal and maternal family names, but mainly focusing on my father's family (HAYES).

They came from Ireland and went to New Zealand, but I haven't been able to locate them immigrating into NZ, there is a possibility they went via Australia.

The first HAYES in NZ was there at the Gold Rush in Otago, and he also owned a Hotel/Pub in Dunedin.

Unfortunately, HAYES is such a popular name, it does make researching difficult. But that is the fun I belive.

Also living in Australia and trying to research NZ is not an easy task, thank goodness for online records.

Cheers Maria

Hi Maria

After a long break, we are now getting the New Zealand Project back in action. Would you like to join the Kiwi Crew Discord server? This is where we are discussing how the project will be organised, though any major changes will be signposted in G2G. There is no obligation to take part in challenges, but you may like to discuss NZ history and work with others to create quality New Zealand profiles. We’re a really friendly bunch.

Hi Maria!

Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know that my maternal grandmother was a Hayes (Hays). Isn't that a coincidence.

I am having a difficult time trying to locate my 2nd great-grandfather, so I know what you are talking about. That Hayes family is popular, and that makes researching difficult, but also rewarding when you find the person you are looking for.

Good luck.

Hi Maria!

Welcome to WikiTree. I am privileged to confirm you as a full member. Now you can add your family to our One Family Tree!

Click here to start with our New Member How To Pages. They will save you time, energy and frustration as you add your family profiles.

I hope you love WikiTree as much as I do. You never know when you will find a lost ancestor or family member. Maybe you will find a family secret about an ancestor like I did.

Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile as the links will work from there.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm always happy to help!

Hi Maria, and thank you for volunteering!

Before I can confirm your membership, I’ll need you to add a little more information about your genealogical interests.

You can do this by editing your tags/comments, adding a couple of sentences to your biography, or posting a brief message in the public comments section of your profile page.

Once we know you are here to help grow the tree, a greeter will be happy to confirm your membership. If you have questions about WikiTree, please feel free to contact me via my profile page.

Thanks, David ~ WikiTree Greeter
