An action was brought by Mr William John Haydon of Staplake Farm, Starcross, against Thomas, James and Edward Wood of Newcastle for the recovery of a farm of 45 acres called Partridge Farm n Cheriton Bishop. The case arose out of a will, dated in 1813, by which John Haydon of Staplake, in the parish of Kenton, Devon, a farmer, gave his farm to his grandson, William Haydon, on his arriving at the age of 21 years. In default, his grandson dying before he attained the age of 21 or without lawful issue he bequeathed that the farm should revert to the lawful heirs of his son William Haydon. The grandson appears to have cut himself off from his family and to have changed his name early in life. He apparently took the name John Wood. The Woods gave satisfactory answers, so the case was abandoned. [Western Times, Exeter, 13 Sept 1901] John Haydon buried 3 Feb 1813 at Kenton aged 60. Probably baptized 19 Feb 1752 at Hittisleigh, son of John and Joan. John of Hittisleigh husbandman married Jane Ponsford of Drewsteignton spinster on 22 Jan 1781 at Hittisleigh, by banns.
