Elva was born in 1901.[1] She was the daughter of (John) Barkley Haydon and Margaret Wilkinson. Her name was listed at birth as "Dorothy E. M.", but her middle name Elva was preferred and Dorothy was shunted to the last position; death record lists her as "Elva Madeline Dorothy".
Elva had musical talent, and performed in both supporting and principal performance roles at a number of barn dances, socials, and annual balls in and around Campbelltown and Appin in the mid-1920s. Her name appears numerous times in the social pages of local newspapers of the time; the ones shown below are a sampling:
NEWS REPORT - SCHOOL OF ARTS ANNUAL BALL [EXTRACT]
So popular has been this annual function in Campbelltown, that we pleasingly have to record the fifth annual as being a great deal more successful than the previous one. . . . J. Kershler carried out the duties of Masters of Ceremonies efficiently. The extras were played by Miss Elva Haydon and were enjoyed to the fullest. The Dresses.—A host of sweet and pretty evening and semi-evening frocks were indeed noticeable, and the task of selecting the belle of the ball was hard to accomplish and it was not until after much deliberation that four young ladies were particularly noted. Miss Elva Haydon we give the honor of being " Belle of the Ball,"and Miss Maxie Forbes, Miss Edith Kershler, and Miss O. Hull the others mentioned.[2]

NEWS REPORT - Settlement Jottings.
. . . the social and dance which was held in the Settlement Recreation Hall on Saturday night last, . . . Miss Elva Haydon presided at the piano, and Mr. Ollie Frost played the extras. Miss Haydon, I might mention, is kindly contributing the music in connection with all functions held to supplement the funds of the Memorial Hall Queen, and the committee are indeed grateful for her very great kindness. . . . In January 1937, she became the second wife of widower Alexander Mathie.
She passed away in 1991.[5]
