Biography

Harriet was born about 1835, the daughter of Joseph and Ann Hayden. In October 1850, she was age 14 and in her parents' household in District 4, St Mary's County, Maryland.[1] In 1856, when she was about 20 years old, she became the second wife of Henry Blackstone, a widower with children.[2]

In 1860, Henry H (56, M, MD) and Harriet (25, F, MD) were in District 3, St Mary's County, Maryland, with three children from his first marriage (Eleanor, Adelaide and Emma) and three young children from the second marriage:[3] Known children from this marriage are:

  1. Joseph F Blakistone (1857)
  2. Ida M Blakistone (1858)
  3. Thomas Henry Blakistone (1860-died young)
  4. Henry Thomas Blakistone (1864)
  5. Albert E Blakistone (1866)
  6. Burnett F Blakistone (1868)

Henry passed away before 1870, when Harriet is enumerated as a widow with five children in District 4, St Mary's County, Maryland. She shows no real or personal estate value.[4]

In 1875, Harriet married for the second time to Chapman K Herbert.[5] In 1880, the family is in St Mary's County, Maryland, with the household consisting of Chapman K (W, M, 50, Farmer), Harriet L (W, F, 40, wife) and children Henry T (W, M, 20), Albert E (W, M, 18), and Burnett F (W, M, 11) (NOTE"": These three are all shown with surname "Herbert," but they should be "Blakistone.") and three children of Chapman and Harriet:[6]

  1. Dawkins K Herbert (1875)
  2. George C Herbert (1876)
  3. Peter C Herbert (1878)

Chapman passed away before 1900, and in 1900 Harriet was once again a widow, age 52, born November 1847, with 9 children born and 7 living. The family included two children from her first marriage (Joseph and Ida) and two from her second marriage (George and Peter), plus two grandchildren. They were renting a farm in St Mary's County, Maryland.[7]

Harriet passed away in 1902 and is has a grave marker at Saint Mary's Catholic Church of Piscataway Cemetery in Prince George's County, Maryland.[8]

Research Notes and Inconsistencies

—Harriet's birth date is all over the place. In 1850, with her parents, she was age 14 (b ca 1836); on the 1860 Census, she was age 25 (b ca 1835); on the 1870 Census, she was age 32 (b ca 1838); on the 1880 Census she was age 40 (b ca 1840); on the 1900 Census, she had a birth date of November 1847, age 52; and her grave marker gives her death as 1902, age 72. Going with the theory that the earliest record is the more accurate, I'm showing November 1835 as her birth date. (Kirch-132 22:01, 3 February 2022 (UTC))
