In the 1901 census Herbert was age 7 living at 650 Old Kent Road, Camberwell with his father Robert Hawkes (49), mother Alice Hawkes (49), sisters Lily Hawkes (20), Rosina Hawkes (18), Alice Louisa Hawkes (12), brother Albert Hawkes (16).[2]
In the 1911 census Herbert was age 17 living at 518 Old Kent Road, Camberwell with his mother Alice Hawkes (59), sisters Lily Hawkes (30), Rosina Hawkes (28), Louisa Hawkes (22). Occupation Tailors cutter apprentice.[3]
Herbert served in the Royal Navy during WW1, initially at the HMS President II shore establishment at Crystal Palace and later in the Eastern Mediterranean. He was transferred to the RAF when the RNAS merged with the Royal Flying Corps on 1 Apr 1918.[4] In Herbert's RAF records his next of kin was given as mother Alice Hawkes.[5]
In 1929, Herbert was living at 518 Old Kent Road with his mother Alice Hawkes and sister Alice L Hawkes.[6]
In 1939, Herbert Hawkes (b. 20 Aug 1893) was living at 9 St James Rd, Bermondsey, London with his sister Alice L Hawkes (b. 23 Feb 1889). Occupation: Dealer.[7]
Herbert Hawkes of 3 Beatrice Rd, Bermondsey died on 8 Oct 1945 at Miller Hospital, Greenwich aged 52. He was buried on 15 Oct 1945 at Southwark, London.[8][9][10]
