"Tragedy at Stockwell. AN OLD MAN FOUND DEAD.
the Coroner, Mr. John Dallwitz, J.P. at Angaston on September 30th. an inquest being deemed unnecessary y the Coroner. Arthur Erwin Lange, of Nuriootpa, stated that at about 9.10 that morning he was riding through the district looking for his horses, and when about a mile south of Stockwell, he saw the dead body of an elderly man lying face downwards in a pool of mud and water ; it was on the east side of Stockwell, on the Angaston road. Frederick Paul Sporn, of Light's Pass, told M.C. Sheridan, after identifying the body that he had known deceased for about forty years, and for the past seven years he had been camping in an old shed on his property having earned a living by doing odd jobs for gardeners around the district. Deceased had been a heavy wine drinker, and had appeared to have been indulging rather to excess during the past fortnight. Deceased had asked for the loan of 1/6 which he refused, whereupon deceased had secured it from Mrs. Sporn. Having then walked across the paddock to Stockwell. He had seen Hausler in his hut at about 7 p.m. that night. Walter Sporn said he had seen the old man walking in the direction of Stockwell at about 10 am and apparently under the influence of liquor. Hugh G H Snelling licensee of the Stockwell Hotel, when interviewed said he refused to supply the deceased with wine at about midday. Hausler had informed him that he was shifting his belongings to Penrice, his old hut having been flooded out, and that Mr. Schiller was coming with his wagon. Deceased asked for a bottle of wine for Schiller and one for himself, He received the bottle for Schiller, and was given a glass of wine. Constable Sheridan told the Coroner that be had found the body, and that there were no signs of violence or recent injury. He presumed death was due to exhaustion brought about through exposure to the extreme cold and wet. Quite a touch of sadness was lent to the investigation by the contents of the old man's box at his hut. From the box was taken a tall silk hat in which he had been married : then as tenderly as they had been laid away was brought out the bouquet and wedding dress that had so elaborately gowned his wife on that happy day. From another corner came a will, dated 1883, in which he bequeathed his possessions to one of his sons. Mrs. Hausler lives in Tanunda, but had not resided with her husband for about fifty years. The two sons born of the marriage have both passed to the Beyond, and although at one time apparently a fairly wealthy man, deceased must have divested himself of it recklessly and descended to the estate of the swagman."[4]
