Biography

Jacob Hauser was born on December 26, 1833 in Nieder Weisel, Wetteraukreis, Hessen, Deutschland, the eldest of the four sons of Johann Georg Hauser and Anna Elisabetha nee Hildebrand who were to take part in the mass emigration of Nieder-Weiselerns to Victoria during the 1850s.

Jacob sailed to Victoria aboard a ship called “Ocean Chief” in 1855 and, soon after arrival, headed to the Smythesdale diggings where Jakob became a partner in a claim to mine for gold.

In 1878 he married Lillian Margaret Hayward, the daughter of William Hayward and Mary (Ward) Hayward of Manchester, England.^[1] His wife, Lillian, died in 1884 aged 36 years.

Jacob then married Mary Jane Lyons in 1886.^[2] Mary Jane died in 1891.

The following year, Jacob (58) married Emily Hannah Osboldstone (36) (born on October 29, 1855 in Prahran, Victoria; daughter of George Augustus Tovell Osboldstone and Lucy (Talbot) Osboldstone) in 1892 in Prahran, Victoria.^[3]

Jacob died on December 24, 1903 in Prahran, Victoria, Australia, aged 69. He was buried in St. Kilda Cemetery, St Kilda, Port Phillip City, Victoria.^[4]
