Betty was born in 1929, the 2nd oldest of 7 children of parents Durling Delbert Hatt (1900-1972) and Mary Isabel (Cole) Hatt (1904-1982)
She grew up mainly in Milton, Nova Scotia, although the family did live in Liverpool for a time when she was young as shown on the 1931 Canada census. She was always known as Betty, and if asked always said she didn't like her official name of Marion Elizabeth.
She was working as a bank clerk in Liverpool in her late teen years when She met a young Bill Wilson at a local dance. He reportedly swept her off her feet, being a notably good dancer. Bill was working as a draftsman in Liverpool. They fell in love, but waited to marry until Betty was 20 at her mother's request. They married in 1949 and moved to Bill's home town of New Glasgow, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Dancing was a big part of their married life together. [1]
Betty and Bill had 8 children all born and raised in New Glasgow:
It was not the norm at that time, to have so many children but also not unheard of. When asked by new acquaintances if Betty & Bill were Roman Catholic, they were known to reply, "No - we're just happy Presbyterians". They said they loved children, and this is why they had eight. But like the popular TV show at the time, "Eight is Enough".
Betty had a long and happy marriage with Bill. They made many visits with their children back home to Milton, Nova Scotia so the children would know their Hatt grandparents and relatives well. They enjoyed their children and grandchildren immensely throughout their life.
Bill passed away in 2004 after a long illness. He was sorely missed by Betty for the rest of her life. "I miss Daddy", she would say to me, but she soldiered on.[2]
She passed away in December 2016 in New Glasgow aged 87 years after several years of failing health. She was buried on Dec13, 2016 alongside Bill in Lorne Street Cemetery, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. [3]
