William Hastie Jr. was awarded the Spingarn Medal for outstanding achievement by an African American.

William Henry Hastie was the first African-American to serve as Governor of the US Virgin Islands.[1]

William was born in Tennessee on November 17, 1904. He was the son of William Hastie and Roberta Childs.

He passed away in Pennsylvania on April 14, 1976.
