Michael was born about 1786 reportedly in Baden in what is now Germany.
At some point, he came to Ritzingen in Wallis, Switzerland and married Anna Maria Biderbost in 1812. Children:
Joseph Ignaz Hassler b. 1813
Katharina Hassler b. 1815
Maria Josepha Hassler b. 1818
Anton Hassler b. 1819
On 1 May 1863 a court at Ritzingen appointed Anton Hasler as legal guardian of Michael Hasler, with Jos. Iganz Hasler as secondary.[1]
By 1870, the family had relocated to the village of Bitsch.
Research Notes
The only source for Michael's birth year is the 1850 census.
The Obergommer website has a profile of Michael Hasler.[2] It indicates he was born around 1770, a large disagreement with the census. It has a separate profile for daughter Katharina (not connected to Michael's as her father), and this profile refers to the Biderboststammbaum for the information that the "Hesler" family settled in Ritzingen in 1786. Perhaps it is a combination of this statement and the fact that Anna Maria was born in the 1780s that led to the estimated 1770 birth year.
Michael is not found in the 1829 census at Ritzingen. A search of neighboring municipalities needs to be made.
He is found at Ritzinging in the 1837, 1846, and 1850 censuses. The household in 1837 census shows:[3]
Hassler Michael, Nagelschmid, von Fremden Herkunst
id Anna Maria
id Joseph Ignatz
id Anton
id Katharina
id Maria Josepha
(This census taker appears generally to have listed adults first, then sons, then daughters, with sons and daughters placed in birth order.)
There is a gap in census records until 1870, at which time the family had moved to Bitsch.[6] The household was:
Hassler Michael, father, b. 1. January 1786, in Bitsch since 1865
Hassler Anton, father, b. 1819, in Bitsch since 1855
Hassler Maria Josepha, Weib, b. 1818
Albrecht Theresia, mother, b. 1829
Hassler Maria, daughter, b. 8 April 1859
Albrecht Katharina b. 1826
Michael, Anton, and Maria Josepha are shown with home municipality in Ritzingen — the others in Bitsch. All except Michael and Anton are shown as having lived in Bitsch their whole lives.
