Earl A. Hassler of Dallas died on Nov. 5 in Dallas. He was 85.

He was born in Underwood, N.D., and raised on a wheat farm in North Dakota.

He married Marjorie Telenga in July 1940 in Turtle Lake, N.D.

They moved to Whidbey Island, Wash., where they raised their family. He worked as a logger and a farmer. He was an active member of the Whidbey Island horse posse. During World War II he and Marjorie worked as welders in the shipyards in Kirkland, Wash.

The family moved to a farm in Pedee in 1960. They later managed the Polk County Fairgrounds for eight years before moving near Monmouth where they raised sheep and cattle. He was known throughout the valley for his custom haying business.

He was a real cowboy learning to ride and farm with horses in North Dakota. He wore his cowboy hat and boots wherever he went and was referred to as "Cowboy" by most everyone.

He loved to play cards and was a true champion level player of "King Around the Corner."

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie in April 1999 and a son, Harvey Hassler who died serving his country in Vietnam in June 1969.

Survivors include his children, Judy Doughty of Monmouth, Earl Jr., "Butch" Hassler and Shirley Sonday, both of Dallas, Claudette Wall of Salem and Roberta Carman of Beaverton; four brothers; two sisters, 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
