Biography

Henry Harwood was born about 4 Feb 1852 in Sutton, Sussex, England, United Kingdom.

In the second quarter of 1879, Henry married Sarah Ann Hurrell (~1857 - ~1947). The marriage was registered in the East Preston district of Sussex, England. Their son was Henry Joseph Harwood (~1880 - 1962).

At the time of the 1891 Census, Henry and Sarah were living in Orchard Place, Arundel, East Preston, Sussex. Henry was working as a Sawyer. They had five children in their home, aged 11 to 2 years old: Henry Joseph, Edmund James, Mary Frances, Frances Ann and Frank. Henry's birth place was recorded as Sutton, Sussex. ^[1]

By 1901, they had seven children in their household, four of whom had been born since the previous Census: Charles, Arthur John, James and Edith Ann. Henry was recorded as working as a Mason's labourer. All the children over 12 years old were working. ^[2]

Henry died about 27 Aug 1931 in Arundel, Sussex, England aged 79.

Research Notes

Henry's occupation, as listed in the 1871 Census was Carpenter ^[3] At that time, Henry was living with his parents, Henry (a Lath Render) and Mary A., and his cousin, Anne Horne b. ~1856, was also in the home in King Street, Arundel, East Preston. I don't believe this is the correct family as this Henry's mother was Sarah, and in previous census this Henry snr and Mary born in Climping weren't the same as this Henry's parents.
