William was born in 1846. He was the son of John Hartley. He passed away in 1922.
Sir William Pickles HARTLEY was the founder of the "Hartley's Jam" empire.
William was Grammar school educated but left school at about fourteen to work at his mother's grocery shop. He started in business for himself in Colne at the age of sixteen.
He was knighted in 1908 for his charitiable acts.
