Biography

Dorothy Harris was the daughter of Arthur Harris and his wife, Dorothy Waldegrave.[1] Her date of birth is unknown, but is estimated to be about 1570.[2]

Dorothy married about 1596 to Robert Kempe, Esq. of Gissing, Norfolk, son and heir of Richard Kempe, Esq. and Alice Cockerham.[1] They had eight sons and three daughters.

  • Robert, Knt., 1st Baronet, eldest son[3] who married Jane Browne and had six children. Robert died 20 August 1647.[1]
  • John,[1] second son.[3]
  • Richard, Esq., 3rd son,[3] baptized in 1600 at Gissing, immigrated to Virginia and married Elizabeth ____ and had one daughter. Richard died shortly after 4 January 1650.[1]
  • Arthur, clerk,[1] fourth son, baptized 1601 and died before 12 May 1645.[3]
  • Edmund, fifth son, born 1606,[3] married Bridget _____ and had one son, Edmund. He died before September 1649.[1]
  • Edward, of Virginia,[1] sixth son.[3](see his profile - he likely settled in Massachusetts)
  • Thomas,[1] seventh son.[3]
  • Matthew[1] not named in his father's will dated 11 November 1611 or the will of his mother, dated 30 March 1626.[3]
  • Dorothy,[3] wife of William Jackman[1]
  • Elizabeth,[3] wife of Sir William Kempe[1]
  • 3rd daughter, not named[1]

Robert Kempe, Esq., died testate on 23 October 1612.[1] Dorothy lived at the Manor House at Flordon after his death, where she died in 1626.[4] Her will directed her burial near her husband, in the chapel in the church at Gissing.[3]

Dorothy left a will written on 30 March 1626.[3] It was proved 29 November 1626[1] and names the following children: daughters Dorothy Kempe and Elizabeth Kempe, and sons Arthur, Edmund, Edward, Thomas, and Sir Robert and his wife Jane.[3] Her will was witnessed by Edward Rouse and Thomas Kemp and its executors were Henry Bing and her cousin, Cleere Talbot.[3]
