Rhoda Harman was born 3 March 1796 in Wythe County, Virginia (see research note re: Birth Location) to Johann Adam Harman and Anna Gardner. She was born on her father's property located on Walker's Creek, today located in Bland County, Virginia. She was a twin to her sister Susanna[1][2].
Rhoda married Daniel Harman on 17 February 1814. Rhoda and Daniel were 1st cousins. Their fathers were siblings[1][2].
On 1 September 1831, Rhoda's father signed his last will and testament. Rhoda and her husband, Daniel, were named within that will[3].
Rhoda and Daniel had ten children together[1][2] (see research note re: Timeline for Birth of Children):
Rhoda was only 49 years old when she passed away. She died on 24 September 1845, likely in Giles County, Virginia (see research note re: Death Location)[1][2]. Rhoda, her husband Daniel, and four of their children, all died from "a scourge of Typhoid fever" in 1845[13]. Although there is no photo of a grave marker, there is a Find-a-Grave profile indicating that Rhoda is buried in Daniel Harman Cemetery located in Bland County, Virginia[2][15].
Research Notes
Birth Location
Rhoda's father spent nearly all of his adult life living on property located on Walker's Creek in what is today known as Bland County, Virginia[16]. Rhoda was born in 1796, well before the establishment of Bland County in 1861. Based on the location of Bland County, and Rhoda's birth year, she was born in Wythe County, Virginia[17].
Timeline for Birth of Children
There are four children of "Big" Daniel and Rhoda whose birth years are not known: Ephriam, Sydney, Juliet, and Peggy. These are the four children who passed away in 1845 from Typhoid Fever. The following timeline shows that it is plausible that these four children were born in 1819, 1823, 1825, and 1827. Assigning these four to specific birth years is not possible without additional source material:
February 1814: Marriage of Daniel and Rhoda[1][2].
1833 - 1836: Range of possible birth years for a child who died from Typhoid in 1845. (Note: This year range ends in 1836 because that is when Rhoda would have been 40 years old. Extending the range to later years comes with the trade-off of an increasingly older mother.)
Death Location
Rhoda's father bequeathed her a portion of his land that was adjacent to land already owned by Rhoda's husband, Daniel[3]. Rhoda's father lived most of his life in the same location. When he signed his will he was living in Wythe County, but today his home is located in Bland County[16].
It is difficult to say whether the land bequeathed to Rhoda in 1831 was in Wythe County or not. Prior to the creation of Bland County, if you were in Wythe County and left the valley containing Walkers Creek by crossing the adjacent mountain just to the north (Brushy Mountain), then you crossed into Tazewell County. If you stayed in the valley and followed Walkers Creek east (downstream), then you would enter Giles County. Making this even more complex is that the boundaries of Tazewell, Wythe and Giles counties changed slightly in 1824. Those boundaries then remained constant until 1861, when Bland County was established from land that previously existed in Tazewell, Wythe, and Giles counties[17]. When Rhoda and Daniel died in 1845, they could have been living in any of these three counties.
The marriage bonds for six (Robert[5], Henry[6], Ann Eliza[8], Barbara[9], Nancy[12], and Sidney[14]) of Rhoda and Daniel's children, however, provide a clue. These marriage bonds were created in years ranging from 1835 to 1843, and all of them were created in Giles County, Virginia. This suggests that Rhoda and Daniel were living in Giles County, Virginia when they passed away.
