Mary was born on 5 June 1814 in Langfield, Todmorden, Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of Samuel Hanson and Martha (Shackleton) Hanson.^[1][2][3]

Mary married Thomas Newton in Todmorden, Lancashire in 1847^[4]. (Todmorden is on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border, and it has belonged to both at one time or another).

In the 1851 census Mary (age 36) was the wife of Thomas Newton in Langfield, Yorkshire, England.^[5]

In the 1861 census Mary (age 47) was the visitor of James Hilton in Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire, England.^[6]

In the 1871 census Mary (age 56) was the sister of Samuel Hansen in Todmorden, Todmorden and Walsden, Lancashire, England.^[7]
