TAUNTON - William J. Hansen, retired clerk of the Taunton District Court, died Tuesday at 61. Mr. Hansen was court clerk 15 years before retiring in 1979.

Before that he was a secretary to Gov. John Volpe for two years, state supervisor of veterans' benefits and veterans' service agent in the Town of Easton. He was a native of Boston and was in the first graduating class at Stonehill College in 1952. He was a lieutenant In the Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Hansen leaves his wife, Catherine E. (Whalen); two sons, William and Mark Hansen, both of Taunton; four daughters, Catherine Walton of North Easton, Elaine Gay of Tewksbury, Patricia Isensor of Raynham and Elizabeth Hansen of Taunton; eight grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters. A funeral Mass will be conducted Saturday at 9 a.m. In St. Mary's Church..
