Biography

1899 BIRTH
Preferred name: Andrew William Hansen[1][2][3]
Birth name: Anders Hansen[4][5][6][7]
Nickname: Andy
Preferred birthdate: 30 August 1899[1][2][8]
Or... 31 August 1899 [4]
Place: Geneseo Township, Tama, Iowa[4]

Father: Lars Peter Hansen [9][1][2]
Mother: Ida Marie "Mary" Olson[1][9][2]

Named after his grandfather Anders Hansen of Denmark, he went by the name Andrew or Andy. With the exception of the Anders Hansen original birth record in Geneseo Township, Tama County, birth date 31 August 1899, all other records and Andy himself used the 30 August 1899 birth date.

1899 - Andrew William Hansen - Iowa Delayed Birth Certificate
Apparently, Andy was unaware that his original birth record was at the Tama County Courthouse when he requested a new birth certificate in 1940.

This 1940 delayed birth certificate incorrectly says Andrew William Hansen was born 30 August 1899 in "the city of Reinbeck, Lincoln Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa." (Note that Reinbeck is in Grundy County, not Black Hawk County, and Lincoln Township is in Tama County.)

Andy was 13 when the Hansen family moved from the farm into Cedar Falls after Peter purchased a popular café and lunchroom from Severin Markussen in October 1913. [13]It has been said that Norma and Andy worked in the family restaurant with their mother.[14]

Although the 1915 census says the five eldest children went to school through 8th grade, they later said they had much less education than that (accounts vary from 3rd to 6th grade).[7] None of the eldest went to school in Cedar Falls and the boys were "farmed out" during the week to help support their large family.

Andy served at the United States Naval air station in Gujan, France, where he spent a year working on airplane maintenance. "The air station was originally designed to be a dirigible station but never progressed past the construction phase due to a lack of men and materials." [19] After the signing of the Armistice, Andy was stationed in South Carolina and Virginia until his discharge as an Apprentice Seaman 15 August 1919.[20]

Andrew Hansen met Mary Kirstine Thuesen in Cedar Falls before she left to work for the Whreyhouse (sic) family in Detroit as a cook. Andy followed her there and they married 27 August 1925 in Lucas County, Ohio. [25] Mary returned to Iowa in October and the young couple moved into one of the three identical houses owned by his mother on Lincoln Street in Cedar Falls where their only child, Betty Jean, was born the following year.

In 1926-27, Andy worked for Frank Kennison's "Clark's Dray & Storage" in Cedar Falls (later owned by Andy's brother Oscar).

Hansen Andrew (Mary) (1)Viking Pump

In 1939, Andy was working at Viking Pump when his father-in-law, Fred Thuesen, asked him to take over the operation of his 160-acre farm about two and a half miles northwest of Cedar Falls. Andy and Mary moved into the large farm home with Fred and Birgette. Later on, Fred sold part of the farm, now the American Martyr Retreat House at 2209 N Union Road in Cedar Falls, and Andy purchased the remainder.

Andy's nephew Richard said that part of Andy's land was along the river. Every morning the dogs would take the cows for a swim across the river to Dead Man's Island and then bring them back at night to be milked. Occasionally, the cattle strayed onto the Rock Island Railway tracks that ran through the property—a 1943 front page newspaper story reported that six of them were hit and killed by a train. [29][30]

1940s - Cattle on the Rock Island Railway tracks

Andy became a successful dairy farmer and served on the board of directors of the well-known Benson Cooperative Creamery--then a large operation where butter production totaled more than 1-1/2 million lbs. in 1944.[31]

A nephew reported, "The telephone poles and lines on highway 20 from there to a town (maybe Finchford) were put in by Andy at no charge to anyone. He maintained them and whenever there was a storm, he would fix them."[32]

In addition to Andy and Mary's active membership in the Danish Nazareth Lutheran Church, he was a charter member of American Legion Post 237 in Cedar Falls, a Master Mason, a member of the Knights Templar and the Oddfellows. He held several offices including worshipful master of Black Hawk Lodge No. 65, A. F. and A. M in 1941 [33]and eminent commander of Baldwin Commandery No. 11 Knights Templar in 1947.[34]

1965 Death of Wife Mary
Mary Hansen died at their farm home 7 November 1965. [35]

Andy retired from farming in 1968 and moved into Cedar Falls. In his later years, Andy was Grand Marshall of an annual "Sturgis Falls Celebration" parade in Cedar Falls. He remained active in the American Legion and he was recognized as a "50-year Mason" before his death in November 1985 at age 86.[36]

1985 DEATH AND BURIAL
Andrew Hansen died 28 November 1985 in Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, Cedar Falls, Black Hawk, Iowa.[2][3] Masonic Services were held with burial 2 December 1985 in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County, Iowa.[37]
