Joan is the daughter of John Hanlon and Eileen Smyth. Born in 1924 [1], Joan left secondary school in Wellington at age 14 and attended a business college to learn shorthand and typing (keyboarding). She achieved a Chamber of Commerce Typing Medal, winning several national competitions. She spent some time training to be a nurse in Gisborne. Joan said that originally she wanted to be a doctor but that was not possible because of either schooling, the war, or parental objections. As far as we know she didn't finish her nursing registration due to sickness. Joan met Harry Williams in 1946, while Harry was working at the "Auckland Star" newspaper. They were married at St Mary of the Angels Church in Boulcott St, Wellington in 1946 [2]. Moving to Auckland, they eventually built a house in New Lynn. As well as parenting, Joan worked as a secretary or typist, for several firms, a school, the Public Health Office at Point Chevalier, and finally at Ceramco. Joan's hobbies were reading, gardening, making clothes, and millinery for a time. At night school she learned woodwork and car engine care, and was active in the Parent-Teacher Association. Joan and Harry moved to Northcote in about 1976. Joan passed away in 1992 [3]
