Biography

Samuel was born in 1847. His father was Henry Holmes Hankins, and his mother is uncertain. He was recorded in the Sherman household in Madison, TN in 1850. He was recorded in 1860 with HH Hankins and Martha Hankins in Phillips, AR.

He married Sarah Rachel Snyder (1853-1931) on 14 Apr 1864 in Knox, Indiana.^[1][2] They both would have been very young at the time, Sarah particularly so. FamilySearch records 12 children for them:

Samuel Hankins was 22 and a farmer, born in Tennessee, in Knox, IN in 1870; Sarah was 17, born in IN; also present was Ival T. Clark, age 4, born in IN. Next door is Andrew Snyder, Sarah's brother, with his wife and family, and her mother Delphia was living with them.

In 1880 in Stanford, Clay, IL, there are recorded S.F. Hankins 32, farmer born in AR (parents in TN); S.R. 27, wife, born in IN; Flora 6; W.F. H. 4; Mary E 2; Delilah 4 mos; also present are Wm C. 21, brother b in AR; Ival Tecumsa, 13, orphan born in IN.

In 1900 in Ohio twp., Mississippi Co., Missouri the family is recorded thus: Sam Hankins, 52, farmer b. AR. Sarah R. 46, b. IN, 11 children born, 10 living. Children (all born IL) are: Charles 18, Edgar 15, Elizabeth 13, Ester 11, Alma 9, Luercie 7, Lilly 4.

In 1910 they are in Dunklin, MO. Samuel is 63 and Sarah is 61, with 11 children born, 8 living. The children in the household are Lurece 15 and Edith, 11.

The 1920 census is not found yet. 1930 census is in Lawrence, IL. Samuel Hankins is 85 and born in TN, Sarah is 77 and from IN.

He passed away in 1933. He is buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Saint Francisville, IL.
