James Hankin was born on 22 Dec 1822, and christened on 5 Jan 1823 at the church of St Peter and St Paul in Ormskirk, Lancashire. He was the son of John and Betty Hankin. His father's occupation was recorded as hatter, and the family's address as Ormskirk. ^[1]

By June 6th 1841, James was one of three young tailors living with tailor John Appleton and family in Liverpool Street, Eccleston in Prescot, Lancashire. The other two were William Ambletin and Charles McMeal. ^[2] Since John may have been James' employer, it may be worth noting that he died in May 1842.

James married Elizabeth Leever on 18 Aug 1851 at St Nicholas' Church in Liverpool, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more), and neither had been married before; James was a tailor living in Circus Street, Elizabeth was living in Marlborough Street. Their fathers were named as John Hankin (hatter) and William Leever (shoe maker). The witnesses were William Crompton and Margaret Crompton. ^[3]

Their daughter Sarah was born in 1851 in Ormskirk, Lancashire. ^[4]

Their daughter Ann was born in 1854 in Ormskirk, Lancashire. ^[5]

Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1859 in Ormskirk, Lancashire. ^[6]

By April 7th 1861, they were living in Aughton Street, Ormskirk; James was a tailor. ^[7]

On the night of April 2nd 1871, James was a patient in Liverpool, Lancashire; he was a tailor. ^[8]

By April 3rd 1881, they were living in Aughton Street, Ormskirk; James was a tailor. Their ten-year-old granddaughter Annie Huxley was with them. ^[9]

By April 5th 1891, James was widowed and living in Ormskirk; he was still a tailor. Two grandchildren were with him, Annie Huxley (now 20) and James Lambert Wattle. ^[10]
