St. John was born in 1869. He was the son of Charles Hankin and Mary Perrott.

He attended Malvern College, then Merton College, Oxford. He was an essayist and playwright. Wikipedia entry for St. John Hankin

In 1901 St. John married Florence Routledge, the daughter of publisher George Routledge.[1]

He committed suicide by drowning himself in the Afon Ieithon on 15 June 1909 aged 39. [2] [3]
