St. John was born in 1869. He was the son of Charles Hankin and Mary Perrott.

In 1901 St. John married Florence Routledge, the daughter of publisher George Routledge.[1]
He committed suicide by drowning himself in the Afon Ieithon on 15 June 1909 aged 39. [2] [3]
