Jupiter Hammon was the first known African-American published author. He is known as a founder of African-American literature. In 1761 he published his poem, "An Evening Thought: Salvation by Christ with Penitential Cries" as a broadside. Jupiter was born about 1711. He passed away about 1806.
Opium and Rose, slaves purchased by Henry Lloyd, are believed to have been the parents of Jupiter Hammon. Jupiter had no known wife or children.
