Biography

Leo Langford Hamilton was born on 28 January 1923, in Fresno, Fresno, California, United States. His father, Henry Harvey Hamilton, was 32 and his mother, Valree May Harrison, was 29.

In the 1930 census Jackie (age 7) was the son of Henry H Hamilton in Pueblo de las Juntas, Fresno, California, United States.[1]

Leo Langford Hamilton enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 13 June 1941 for World War II service. Aviation Structural Mechanic 1/c Hamilton served in Fighting Squadron 84 (VF-84) aboard the USS Bunker Hill (CV-17), an Essex-class aircraft carrier, and was promoted to Chief Aviation Mate.[2] The ship participated in battles in the Southwest Pacific, Central Pacific and the drive toward Japan through Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and air raids on the Japanese homeland, until it was badly damaged by kamikaze hits on 11 May 1945. He was honorably discharged on 12 June 1947. He re-entered the U.S. Navy on 28 May 1952 for service during the Korean War. He remained in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, being promoted to Line Lieutenant (O-3) on 1 July 1956[3], to Commander (O-5) on 1 June 1966[4], and rising to the rank of Captain (O-6). He retired from military service on 30 June 1985.[5]

Leo Langford Hamilton married Helen Yvonne Borders on 12 August 1945, in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California.[7]

Leo Langford Hamilton died on 15 August 1989, in Orange Park, Clay, Florida, United States, at the age of 66. Captain Leo L. Hamilton, USN was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia.[8]
