Biography

This profile is part of the Edisto Island, South Carolina One Place Study.

Paul was the son of John Hamilton and Mary Grimball of Edisto Island, Colleton County, Province of South Carolina.[1] He inherited and acquired land on Edisto Island and James Island and served in the Commons House of Assembly in 1720-21.[2]

He married Martha Bower, daughter of William Bower and Martha Hext, and they had children Paul, Martha (m. Rev. John McLeod), John, Archibald, and Dorcas.[2]

Paul Hamilton's Will, on which the date is missing, was proved 7 March 1738/9. He mentions his sons Paul, John, and Archibald, daughters Martha and Dorcas, and nephew Paul Wilkins. He left a bequest to the Presbyterian Church at Wiltown, and the church at Edisto Island.[3]

Paul's estate passed probate on 16 November 1739 in South Carolina and listed 4 slaves.[4]

The enslaved of Paul Hamilton were named in his probate inventory 27 Apr 1739.[5]

Thanks for the addition, David. I note, however, that the ancestry source you cite seems to be the same Will as the Family Search citation (source #3), which is easier to access.

There is no question that FamilySearch is easier for users to access, being free. But I much prefer the Ancestry.com search interface. Best world = use both. But when I am researching, I constantly have to ask myself how deep to go on a particular person or item of interest before moving on.
