Appears Bathurst Pioneer Register No 2058.
Residence : ‘Wardell’ (not named until c 1900).
Occupation : Farmer at Queen Charlottes Vale.
Other Information : On arrival Andrew rented about 20 acres on the Vale Creek, part of a grant to Dr Robert Wardell, a barrister, who, with W C Wentworth had started the first free newspaper (The Australian) in NSW.
Wardell had been murdered by bushrangers on his farm at Petersham, and the property in Queen Charlottes Vale was re-assigned and sub-divided and sold in 1855.
After the establishment of the flour mill at ‘Rainham’ Andrew, who had acquired a two-horse trolley, carted flour to the goldfields at Ophir.
After his wife died, he went gold digging at Wattle Flat, having some modest success, and was able to buy a couple of houses in Lambert St Bathurst and by mortgaging these bought the first 20 acres of the farm which he was already occupying.
