Henry George W 'Harold' Hambleton was born on 15th March 1907 in Wandsworth, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. [1]
He became a gasfitter.
George married Trudy Oakley in 1930 in Wandsworth, Surrey. [2] They had no biological children, however adopted David Hanscombe in the early 1940s.
During the Second World War, George served in the British Army, in the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment. He was aged in his early forties. He was with the 2nd Battalion in France and was evacuated at Dunkirk in May 1940. The battalion conducted home defence duties in England 1940-43, before deploying to Tunisia, North Africa in March 1943. He then transferred to the 1st Battalion and deployed to British India, where he was involved during the Burma Campaign of 1944. For his war service, George was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star with North Africa 1942-43 Clasp, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-1945.
George and Trudy's son, obtained a position with P&O / Princess Lines as a steward in the mid 1950s and went to sea for the next twenty years, before marrying and settling in Queensland, Australia.
Aged 67 years, he passed away in 1974 in Eastbourne, East Sussex. [3] He was survived by Trudy, who passed in 1977.
George's medals, together with his hat badge, are held by his grandson, Graham Hambleton.
