Mary was born on 23 June 1801 in Cheltenham Twp, Montgomery Cty, PA. She was the daughter of Anthony Harden Hallowell and Jane (Shoemaker) Hallowell.

Mary died at the age of 86 on 18 April 1888 in Camden, Camden Cty, NJ.

Research Notes

In Hugh Foulke's "Life and Letters of Mary S. Lippincott, " Philadelphia, 1893 , he says, "She was endowed with a vigo rous intellect and retentive memory, a nd before she had con cluded her tenth year had read aloud to her grandfather, Be njamin Shoemaker, the Bible, as well as the journal of Geor ge Fox and po rtions of other Friends' works. Her educatio n was received at day schools at Hatboroand Abington, an d at boarding-schools at Westtown, PA, and Fair Hill , MD . When about twenty-one years of age, she engaged in teach ing, a work for which she seemed to be fitted, both by natu re and training, and which was not finally abandoned unti l she was in her eightieth year. In her twenty-ni nth year , with the full unity of her meeting, her gift in the minis try was acknowledged andapproved." For more than twenty y ears she was clerk of the Yearly Meeting of women Friends , held at Fifteenth and Race Streets, in Phila delphia. She had been a faithful and acceptable minister of the gosp el for 6 0 years.
