Biography

Birth and Parentage

Ann was born on 17 Dec 1760, the daughter of John Halladay and his wife Ann née Lock.[1]

Marriage and Family

On 27 February 1781 she married Edward Cheyney, Gent., the son of John Wilson Cheyney, Yeoman and Gentleman and his wife, Martha née Baily. One of the marriage records has her name as Mary Holloday, [2]but the date and place of marriage and the groom's name are the same, so it can be assumed that this is a clerical error.[3]

Ann and Edward's daughter and first-born child, Ann was born in Eling, Hampshire, in 1782, and they then had three sons - John, born in Eling on 29 Oct 1783, Charles, baptised on Wednesday, 2 Nov 1785 in Romsey,[4] and Thomas, also baptised in Romsey, on Thursday, 7 Feb 1788. [5][6]

  1. Ann, b. Est. 1782 in Eling, Hampshire, d. 17 April 1834 in East Cholderton, Andover, Hampshire[7]
  2. John Cheyney, b. 29 Oct 1783 in Eling, Hampshire[8]d. 3 Dec 1864 in New Forest, Hampshire[9][10]
  3. Charles Cheyney, b. Wednesday, 2 Nov 1785 in Eling, Hampshire, [11]d. 3 April 1836 in Westover, Andover, Hampshire[12]
  4. Thomas Cheyney, b. 7 February 1788 in Eling, Hampshire[13], d. Thursday, 2nd July 1846, in Beaulieu, Hampshire. [14]

Ann married farmer James Tarver and died on 17 April 1734 in East Cholderton. [15] John became a farmer in Fawley on the west side of Southampton Water and married Jane Wyatt. Charles also became a farmer and died unmarried. [16] and Thomas became Steward to Henry James, 2nd Baron Montagu of Boughton of Beaulieu.

Life

Ann's husband Edward became Estate Steward for William Sloane Stanley Esq. of Paultons, which had been built by Hans Sloane and completed in 1808. [17][12][18][19] William Sloane Stanley inherited the estate from his father, Hans Sloane-Stanley in 1823 and made considerable improvements to the house which included the main bridge over the artificial river. [20]

Paultons, the seat of William S.Stanley esq

Ann and Edward lived in a house on the Paulton's estate, although where this was has yet to be ascertained. Edward, as a gentleman, well educated, would have been paid a good salary to look after his employer's property and land; he also had his own farm in Ower, Eling, Romsey, and was a parish overseer. Ann's life would have been comfortable, spent ordering her home and caring for her children. They seem to have been a close and loving family and had standing in the local community.

Death

Ann predeceased her husband, passing away on Friday 1st April 1836. Her death was reported in the Hampshire Telegraph and Naval Chronicle on Monday 11 April.[12] and tragically, her son Charles, shortly after visiting his father to commiserate with him on his bereavement, on his return home, also died, two days after the death of his mother. The Hampshire Telegraph reported that Charles, 50, had returned home to Westover, near Andover, and gone to bed. The next morning, when he failed to appear, the others in his house (he had previously lived in Ower and probably farmed with his father[21]) forced his bedroom door and found him a corpse. He died unmarried. [12]
