Birth
Isabella McCallum "Bella" Halliday was born in 1874 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of William Halliday and Catherine Kincade. [1] She was also known as "Bella" (according to the birth record for her daughter Elizabeth in 1905). [2]
Marriage
On 23 December 1898, Isabella, who resided in Belfast at the time, married Alexander Warren, a card cutter from Larne. They were married in the Cliftonville Presbyterian Church in the parish of Shankill in Belfast. Alexander's father was listed as Samuel Warren, a damask weaver. Isabella's father was listed William Halliday, a flax dresser. Their witnesses were John Rothery and Elizabeth Carroll. [3]
Alexander and Isabella would have seven children:
Curiously, on the birth records for their first three daughters, the last name of their parents (Alexander and Isabella) would be listed as "Waring."
Alexander and Isabella were living on Newington Avenue in the Town of Larne in County Antrim for the births of their daughters Maria and Mabel. Larne is a port town on the east coast of County Antrim about 40km north of Belfast, well-known today for its ferry crossings to Scotland due to the close proximity that Larne has to Scotland.
In the 1901 Ireland Census, Isabella, listed as age 26, was living with her husband Alexander and their daughter Maria, in the household of her widowed mother-in-law on Newington Avenue in Larne. Isabella's husband was working as a damask card cutter (a job in a linen spinning mill). [4]
Alexander and Isabella's daughter Elizabeth was born in 1905. Her birth record shows that they were living at 22 Chief Street in the parish of Shankill in north Belfast at the time.
In the 1911 Ireland Census, Isabella, listed as age 33, was living with her husband and their children at 22 Chief Street in Belfast. Her husband's widowed mother and spinster sister Elizabeth Warren were also living with them. Isabella's husband was working as a card cutter. Of note, the census lists her birth location as "England" whereas the 1901 census listed it as "Glasgow." [5]
