Biography

Eliza was born in Bryansford, Castlewellan, County Down, Ireland. She and her first husband, John Shaw, moved to the United States in 1827, eventually settling in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, a cholera epidemic took the life of her husband. Eliza opened a shop similar to one her father kept in Ireland, where a variety of household goods were sold. On 5 August 1835, Eliza married Andrew Stranahan I. Their three sons, Andrew II, James Alexander, and Robert were born in Philadelphia. In 1851, Eliza and Andrew purchased and moved to a farm in East Lackawannock Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where they lived until the end of their lives. Eliza lived to the age of 100!
