Biography

Mary Ann Hallett was born in the December quarter of 1869, at Cramlington, Northumberland, England, to Henry and Dinah Hallett^[1].

The 1871 Census recorded Mary Ann Hallett, 1, at Cramlington Low Colliery, Cramlington, Northumberland, England, with her parents, Henery, 29, Housekeeper, and Dinah, 27, Wife, and siblings Emley, 5, and Anne, 3^[2].

Mary Ann's father died in the December quarter of 1871, at Tynemouth, Northumberland, England^[3].

Mary Ann's mother married Joseph Elford in the September quarter of 1872, at Tynemouth, Northumberland, England^[4].

The 1881 Census recorded Mary A. Hallett, 11, Scholar, living on Junction Row, Cramlington, Northumberland, England, with her stepfather, Joseph Elford, 39, Coal Miner, mother Dinah, 37, Wife, and Hallett siblings Emily, 15, no occupation, Annie, 13, and Harriett, 9, both Scholars, and Elford siblings Amelia, 7, and Flora, 5, both Scholars, and Elizabeth, 1^[5].

The 1891 Census recorded Mary A. Hallet, 21, living on Front Street, Seghill, Northumberland, England with her parents, Joseph Elford, 48 Coal Miner, and Dinah, 45, Wife, and Elford siblings Flora, 15, Elizabeth, 11, Robert, 9, and John F., 3^[6].

Mary Ann Hallett married John Henry Barrass, in the December quarter of 1893, at Tynenouth (probably Seaton Delaval), Northumberland, England^[7].

Mary Ann and John Barrass had 7 children:

The 1911 Census recorded John Hery Barrass, 45, Coal Miner Hewer, and Wife Mary Ann, 41, living at Whitley, Seghill, Northumberland, with their children John Henry, 12, Dinah, 11, both in School, James Cuthbert, 9, Annie Elizabeth, 7, and Isobel, 5^[9]. All the children should have been in school, so James, Annie, and Isobel were probably also Scholars, but an error was made in not noting this information on the Census at the time.

Mary Ann was widowed on 16 September, 1941.

Mary Ann Barrass died on 25 April, 1943, aged 73, in Seghill, Northumberland, England, and was buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery there, where she shares a headstone with husband John^[10][11]. The inscription on their headstone reads:

In Loving Memory of JOHN HENRY BARRASS of Seghill died September 16th 1941 aged 75 years. Also his dear wife MARY ANN BARRASS died April 25th 1943 aged 73 years.
