James was born in 1894. He was the son of Joseph Hallett and Edith Whebby.
When the 1st World War broke out James was working as a Shepherd. He enlisted and served as a Private in the 13th Reinforcements, J Company, New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

His father passed away on Christmas Eve 1916.
Tragically James was killed in action on 8 June 1917. He was 23 years of age. He is memorialised on his parents' headstone in Waipukurau , Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
