William Hall was born June 4th 1879 in Moston, Manchester, the son of William Hall & Elizabeth (Bradbury) Hall. His father had come from a rural background to the city and worked as a machinist (repariring machines), and later as a presser off (ironing completed garments) in a cotton mill. William was the third and last of the 3 children in the family, all boys, not counting any infant deaths. By the 1881 census, when William was 1, the family had moved from Moston on the north-east side of Manchester to Hankinson Street in Hulme in south Manchester, about 4 miles away as the crow flies.[1] By 1891 the family had moved again, to Upper Moss Lane, and William's mother Elizabeth was working as a midwife. A domestic servant Alice Ann Hill was living with them and working for them, and her 3-year-old daughter Beatrice also lived there.

By 1901 William was 21 and working as a gas inspector. The family had moved from Manchester to Timperley in Cheshire, five miles to the south-west of Hulme. Altrincham just under 2 miles further south-west is described as somewhere invalids from Manchester went for clean air.[2] Both William's parents were still working - his father as a mechanical labourer, his mother as a midwife - and there was no domestic servant; his mother may possibly have had more time at home as this was probably a less densely populated area and there may therefore have been less call for her services, but it also depends how many other midwives were in the area and how popular she was.

Between 1901 and 1911 all of William's family emigrated to Canada; he was the last to go, emigrating himself in 1911. By 1916 he had married and was living at Benton Station, Alberta but his wife wasn't with him, only his father; his first wife was said to be Eileen Emily Whitworth.[3] William (junior) is said to have been a farmer and restaurant owner there, having received a Western Land Grant.[3] His father (William), mother (Elizabeth (nee Bradbury)) and 2 brothers (Joseph and Frank) had immigrated to Canada about 4 years before William came. His marriage seems not to have been a success; they are said to have divorced.[3]

William married Rose Neale in 1923. Sadly, she died in 1924. In 1927, he married again, to Rose's younger sister, Ethel. When William retired, they moved to Oyen, Alberta. Later, in the 1960s, they moved again, to Enderby in British Columbia.[3]
