Biography

Patrick was born in County Sligo, Ireland around 1826 to 1848.

In late 1870, he married widow Margaret Clark née Dogherty, a fellow Irish immigrant, in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England. They had one son together, born around 1871-1873.

Research Notes

This person appears in his marriage record and the 1881 census as Patrick Haley. In the 1871 census, he appears as William Haley. Unclear which was his actual name. If naming conventions are anything to go by, his stepson (possibly biological too, but uncertain as he was born a year and a half before the marriage) was named John WILLIAM Haley, and said stepson named his second son PATRICK Haley.

There is also confusion with the birth date. 1871 census shows William Haley, aged 23 (born circa 1848 in Ireland), railway platelayer, living in Whitwood with his wife Margaret and her two sons. In the 1881 census, Margaret is living alone in Whitwood with her sons, and her occupation is "colliery labourer's wife". A few pages back is Patrick Haley, aged 55 (born circa 1826 in Sligo, Ireland), a colliery labourer living alone in Whitwood.

Unclear on death date. Wife's status is "married" in 1891 and 1901 censuses, suggesting her husband was still alive, but I have been unable to locate him past the 1881 census.
