There are conflicting accounts from the siblings of this baby concerning his brief life and death in "The Haley-James Family History". Howard's brother Harvey recalls, "When we were living at Paonia, the baby - - I think his name was Howard, pulled boiling water onto himself by tipping over an open kettle on the hearth. One of my brothers and I were sent by Mother to fetch Dad who was clearing timber. By the time we ran to him and got back to the house, the baby had died." His sister, Ida Mae , apparently believed that the baby toddled outside in cold weather, became chilled, caught pneumonia, and died in February of 1902, just 6 weeks before Armilda passed away. "In 1949, Harvey, "Lonnie", and J. Elmer stated that their brother named Howard Chester was born in 1900 and died in 1901 and was about 1 1/2 years old."
