Biography
Though at the time of recording his birth he was named John M. Haley, the names this man used regularly were James and/or J.T. The use of initials was a jaunty custom in the decades leading up to and following the Civil War - especially so for Confederate sympathizers.
From his Death Certificate:
James Thomas Haley was born on July 12, 1853 in Tennessee, the son of Joseph B Haley (ca 1832–1894) and his wife Tabitha Jane (Tracy) Haley (1827–1896).
He was married about 1880 to Nannie M "Binkie" Foster (1854-1935), and she was the daughter of Jesse H Foster (ca 1825- ) and America Frances (Cochran) Foster (ca 1829- ). As of the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Binkie had had no children.
An insurance solicitor living at 713 16th Avenue South, Nashville, James was 62 years old and married when he died at Saint Thomas Hospital on October 10, 1915 of a peptic ulcer. Burial was the next day in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
