He played in the Negro Leagues with the Birmingham Black Barons and the Indianapolis Clowns. In 1951 he played catcher for the Chicago White Sox. [3]
Sam comes from the largest major league baseball family. He is the father of MLB players Jerry Hairston, Sr. and Johnny Hairston. He is the grandfather of Jerry Hairston, Jr. and Scott Hairston. His son, Sammy Hairston, Jr. and three grandsons, Johnny Hairston, Jr., Jeff Hairston, and Jason Hairston all played in the minor leagues. [3]
