Thomas was born in 1831, the son of James Moseley and Sarah E. (Ayers) Haden, in Montgomery County, Virginia, where he was raised.
Thomas was working as a carpenter in Virginia up until 1860. In 1861 he relocated to Ohio where, on December 12, 1861, he married Susan Mary (Ferdig) Richards, a young widow. Mary had a child (David Richards (1859-1939)) from her first marriage but she and Thomas had none of their own.
The move away from Virginia when the winds of war were blowing may have been due to Thomas' stance against slavery since in 1862 he joined the Union Army. He became a Private in Company K of the 45th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. He saw action in Kentucky and was either killed or died of sickness on May 22, 1863.
Thomas' body is buried in the Cave Hill National Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. His last name is spelled Headen.
