Gretna Burial Park, Section E.

Gretna, Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA.
Notes
Note N20In February 1861, the country was moving towards war. In that month, John T and James Miller Haden attended a meeting at Pittsylvania Court House to select delegates for a state convention. Also present were; William Haden and his sons, Richard and Thomas D Haden. James was probably prevented from serving in the war because he had a club fist. We assume he helped support the family during the war as a Wheelwright until brother John returned. (Is missing from 1870 census for VA. Was probably in Logan County, WV after the war.) Then they returned before the birth of their children.
James "Jim" and his son Al constructed the first church building, Payneton Methodist Church, which was built in 1892. In 1925 the first church was destroyed by a tornado leaving only a small corner with the piano standing. James and Martha transferred out of Payneton Methodist Church 6 Jun 1904.
From the Pittsylvania Packet, Spring 2004; Pittsylvania's Communities in the 1880's: Part II.
The following descriptions of Pittsylvania's towns and communities come from an 1881-1882 Danville City Directory. Herman Melton provided copies from the book to the society. The editor plans to print more of the descriptions in later editions of the Packet. Has one hundred inhabitants, is on the Va. Mid. Ry. Twenty miles north of Chatham, the county seat; is located on Sycamore Creek in a fine agricultural section. Iron ore and marble are abundant. There are several saw and grist mills in operation near here. There are also three churches and two schools near. Mails daily. Notes: the abbreviations used in the original document were copied. Evidently, P M stood for Postmaster. The abbreviation for general merchandise varied from genl mdse to gen mdse. The VA Midland Railroad was shortened to Va Mid Ry. Wm was the shortened form of William; Benj was the abbreviated form of Benjamin.
