Lee was the 6th son of John Hackett and Adell Leverich, born in 1895.(No birth record exists but pob confirmed by his mother.) When his parents separated the older boys went with their father. By age 6 Lee joined them in Rush County, Kansas. Here Lee was able to go to school for awhile until his father moved them to Arizona. The friction of the brothers toward the youngest Lee finally drove the 8 year old into the world alone. He was the only one of the boys who would not continue to live and move around with their father. Lee was never to see or hear from his father or brothers William and Jesse again. [Story told to Helen Mehler]
He worked as a clown with Barnam and Bailey Circus before 1916. Between 26 Sep 1917–Sep 1918 he was employed by the Dept of the Interior, U. S. Reclamation Service, as a Ditch Rider assigned to Fort Shaw, Montana. (camp 12 USRS Gilman, Montana) He earned $70.20/month. After that he went to work at the Swifts Egg Plant, Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.[1]
He married Martha Brunhoeber in 1919. [2] Lee would work construction by 1920. [3][4]After their 6 children were grown, Lee and Martha moved to Portland, Oregon. In 1959, walking to work, Lee was struck by a speeding truck in a school zone in front of his apartment building, on Killingsworth Avenue in Portland. He is buried in the kyline Memorial Gardens, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. [5]
