Abraham Gyte was born on 11 March 1845 at Stanton Hillside, Derbyshire. He was the youngest child of James Gyte and Ann Stayley.[1][2] His older sibling were George (1837-1837), Mary Ann (1832-1905), George (1835-1857), Sarah (1838- 1891) and Hannah (1841-1865).
In 1851 he was living in Swanwick Village , near Alfreton, Derbyshire, with his mother Ann and brother George (16), a coal miner and sisters Hannah (12) and Sarah (9) .[3] His father, James, had died in 1846,[4] leaving Ann to bring up her young family alone. Ann was working as a lace runner to support her family.
In 1861 Abraham was still in Swanwick, now 16, he was working as a coal miner and was lodging with John Fryer, a cordwainer. [5] His older brother George had been killed in a Ripley Colliery Explosion in 1857 and Abraham was now working in the same colliery.[6] His mother had died in 1858.[7]
Abraham moved to Yorkshire, probably for work. On 6th April, 1868 he married Mary Ann Nuttall at All Saints Church, Darfield.[8][9]
In 1871 Abraham and Mary Ann were living at 26 George Street, Wombwell, Yorkshire with their two small daughters, Elizabeth (3) and Hannah (6 months). He was still employed as a coal mine.[10]
In 1881, still at the same address were Abraham and Mary Ann, Elizabeth (12), Hannah (10), and George (8), Arthur (6), Annie (7) and Emily (3).[11] Another child, James had been born in 1879, but had sadly died a year later.[12][13]
By 1891 at home in a little 4 room house at 27 George Street, Wombwell were Abraham and Mary Ann, with George (18), a coal miner, Arthur (16), also a coal miner, Annie (14), Emily (12) , and three more children, Sarah Dorothy (9), Ada (5) and Percy (1).[14] There had been another child, Abraham who had been born in January 1886 but he had died in September that year.[15][16]
Two more children were to follow, Percy (1889) and Ellen (1894).
Abraham's daughter, Emily was at home in 1894 and gave birth to twin daughters out out of wedlock. A year later both babies died with infantile diarrhoea.[17]
Abraham's wife, Mary Ann, died in September 1896.[18]
In 1901 the family were still at 27 George Street, Wombwell and at the time of the census. Abraham (still working in the coal mines) was at home with daughters Annie (24) and Ellen (7), who was disabled.[19] Annie cared for Ellen ( known to the family as Nellie) until Ellen died in 1938.[20][21] Ada (13) and Percy (11) were patients at Kendray Fever Hospital when the census was taken.[22]
By 1911 the family had moved again, but not very far. They were at 53 George Street. Abraham, had now retired from work, and with him were Percy (21), a coal miner, Annie and her husband Frederick William Hitch and their daughter Ada (1), along with Abrahams other daughter Ellen.[23]
Abraham died in 1921 on 9 July 1921 and was buried on 12 July 1921 in the family grave in Wombwell Cemetery.[24][25]
