Biography

Birth

Richard was born in 1808 in Broadwater, Worthing, Sussex. He was one of seven children born to Samuel and Elizabeth Guile.

Marriage and Children

Richard married Caroline Goble in Broadwater, Sussex, on 28 August 1833 [1]

Caroline and Richard had children:

  • Maria Goble Guile in1836
  • Caroline in 1840
  • Kate in 1841
  • Ellen J in 1844
  • Jane born about 1851
  • Esther in 1853
  • Emma born about 1856

In 1841 Richard (30) and Caroline (25) were living in Egremont Place Worthing. Richard was working as a Brewer and Caroline as a Straw Bonnet maker. Baby Caroline (1) was with them also another Straw Bonnet Maker Harriett Plumer.[2]

In 1851 the family were living at 1 North Street Broadwater. Richard was a Brewer's Assistant, Caroline was still making Straw Bonnets. With them were Caroline (11), Ellen (6), Jane (4 months) and a servant Anne Baker aged 16.[3]

In 1861 Richard and Caroline were living at 15 Warwick Place, Broadwater with their daughters Jane (12), Esther (10) and Emma (5). Richard was working as a labourer at the Brewery. [4]

In 1871 the family were at 8 Warwick Place. Richard (61) was a labourer, Caroline, a Straw Hat Manufacturer, was being assisted by Esther (17) and Emma (15).[5]

In 1881 the family were still at 8 Warwick Place Broadwater. Richard (72) was a Brewer. Caroline (66) had no occupation against her name but Emma (25) was a Milliner. Jane (30) was now married to a Signalman and she and their son William Baker (3) were staying at the address. [6]. The 1881 census was taken in April and Caroline must have been close to death at the time as she was buried on 5th May [7]

In 1891 Richard (82) had moved to live with his married daughter Esther and her family at 2 Hertford Rd, Broadwater. He was now retired. [8]

Death

Richard died in 1891 aged 83 in East Preston , Sussex, England. [9] He was buried in West Tarring, Sussex on 2 January 1892. [10]
