Syrous Sanders Guffey
Several early census records conflict with Syrous's exact date of birth and the spelling of his first name for that matter. His year of birth has been reported to be as early as 1868 to late as 1877. His official death certificate states 1871 as the year. Regardless of that uncertainty, there are many undeniable facts that about Syrous Guffey's life. He was born into an extremely large family, had an even larger one himself and was adored and remembered by many long after he was gone. He raised his family in a very religious and spiritual atmosphere. Syrous is buried near the very place where much of the Guffey history started on Gunter's Mountain. He left behind an amazing legacy in extraordinary size. The Guffey family still live on in large numbers inside this rural area of northern Alabama.
Early Life Syrous Guffey was born and raised not too long after the American Civil had ended. Alabama, like many Southern states, suffered economic hardship, in part because of continued dependence on agriculture. Just like his father,Ephraim B.Guffey and most of the other men in the area, Syrous farmed most of his life. His mother was Morning Caroline McKinney, also an Alabama native and the the first wife of his father. Syrous's mother died when he was just a boy. His father remarried a widow shortly after named Martha (Sweatman) Anderson.
Syrous Guffey was married a total of three times in life. His first wife was Sarah Caroline Hastings. They were united in marriage on July 17, 1893 in Dekalb, AL.
