Biography

John was born in 1844, in Amherst, Virginia. He was the son of Joseph Henry Grow/Groah and Eliza Catherine Miller.

On 31 Oct 1863, in Richmond, he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 20th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery. He was captured in Amelia, Virginia on Apr 6, 1865[1]. He took the Oath of Allegiance on June 27, 1865, at Point Lookout, Maryland and was discharged/released[2].

His brothers Joseph and William also served. Joseph in Company B, 20th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery[3], then 38th Regiment, Virginia Infantry[4]. William in the 20th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery[5] then the 44th Infantry Regiment[6].

On 15 Oct 1871, in Appomattox, Virginia, he married Nannie Watson Crews. They settled in Appomattox where they had 12 children.

 Living in Appomattox throughout his life, it is here he passed away in 1927. He is buried at the Rebecca Cemetery.
