On 31 Oct 1863, in Richmond, he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 20th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery. He was captured in Amelia, Virginia on Apr 6, 1865[1]. He took the Oath of Allegiance on June 27, 1865, at Point Lookout, Maryland and was discharged/released[2].
His brothers Joseph and William also served. Joseph in Company B, 20th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery[3], then 38th Regiment, Virginia Infantry[4]. William in the 20th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery[5] then the 44th Infantry Regiment[6].
On 15 Oct 1871, in Appomattox, Virginia, he married Nannie Watson Crews. They settled in Appomattox where they had 12 children.
