Biagia Grizzaffi is born and baptized Blasiam on 8 August 1868. She is the firstborn child of Leoluca Grizzaffi and Bernarda Saporito. She is named after her late paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Onofrio Gennaro and Biagia Listi, son and mother.[1]
Biagia marries Castrenze Salerno, her first cousin once removed, on 8 January 1888. Her father has died by this time, and her mother is living. This marriage record contains a dispensation due to third degree consanguinity.[2] Castrenze's mother, Giuseppa Ficarotta, is Biagia's maternal great aunt.[3]
Castrenze and Biagia have at least five children: Nicolo' (1889), Giuseppa (1896), Leoluca (1898), and twins Lucia and Salvatore (1901).
Nicolo' is born and baptized 5 October 1889. His godmother is Giuseppa Saporito, who is unmarried.[4]. In the 1891 manifest, he is called "Nicasio," his paternal grandfather's name.
Castrenze Salerno, 33 (b. 1858), a farmer, his wife Biagia Grizzaffi, 23 (b. 1868), and their son, called Nicasio in this record, age two (b. 1889), immigrate to New Orleans. Also traveling is Giuseppe Salerno, 50, laborer. All are illiterate. They appear on a handwritten list of passengers arriving at New Orleans between 16 November and 20 December 1891. This ship is called the Capitain.[5]
The twins are born in the spring of 1901. Salvatore dies at 13 days of age (b. 27 Mar) on 9 April.[8] and Lucia dies at one month and fourteen days of age (b. 27 Mar 1901) on 11 May.[9]
