Augustine George Grime was born in 1883 in Oamaru, Otago, New Zealand. He was the firstborn child of New South Wales-born Reverend Sydney Grime and his wife, Frances Croasdill. [1]
Soon after his birth, the young family voyaged to England, where Augustine's father assumed the duties of chaplain to Her Majesty's forces at Aldlershot. In 1886, they made another long voyage, to Newcastle, New South Wales, where the good Reverend was appointed priest in Christ Church Cathedral. There, Augustine received three brothers and a sister. He lost his mother in 1904.

He joined the battalion in the New Year, in time for its move to Ypres, Flanders and the Battle of Messines on 7th June 1917. [5] He was wounded in the action at Messines on 11th June and evacuated to England. After having his left leg amputated above the knee, he was repatriated home 1st November 1917.
