By Mabel L. Webber[1]

Paul Grimball (Thomas, 2, Paul, 1.) since he is named as executor in his fathers will, was probably born about 1700, and died between Jan. 29, 1749/50 and Jan. 25, 1750/51. He was a planter on Edisto Island, and died there. Paul Grimball married several times, certainly three, and we have the maiden name of only one of his wives, Mary Barnwell, daughter of Col. John Barnwell who seems to have been his second wife. His last wife was Mary, daughter of Susannah Winborn, widow of Thomas Winborn, by a former marriage; after the death of Paul Grimball, this wife, Mary, married Capt. William Lawton for his third wife and after his death, she married again for her third husband, Samuel Fickling.

Paul Grimball made his will[2] Nov. 24, 1746; Codicil dated 9 Jan. 1749; Will proved 25 Jan. 1750; Paul Grimball of Edisto Island, Colleton County. Land Acquisitions

From the Personal Papers of Lawton K. Grimball

In 1740 he purchased from Saml. Jones of Charleston the Island containing 800 acres situated on the west side of Edisto Island called Schinkings Island, but now Linkleys Island (It was granted to Christopher Linkley by the Lords Propietors on the 14th of March 1694) for £4000 lawful money together with a small Island containing 40 acres called Reopns Island.[4]

In 1734 he obtained the Charter of a Ferry to extend from one of his plantations called the Point of Pines to Mrs. Bryan landing near Ledenwan creed on Wadmalaw Island.

In 1736 he is mentioned in the Statutes as one of the Enquirers for Edisto Island and also as one of those who was obliged to send his slaves to keep open the Haulover Cut. He also bought in 1750 a plantation about 800 acres from Richard Ashe. This land had been originally granted to John Whitmarsh (it was sold in 1795 by Paul Grimball Jr. of Beaufort District to Wm. Evans he having obtained it by descent.)

In 1734 he bought from Wm. Mellichamp 500 acres of land on what was then known as Watch Island but now called Botny Bay Island. In 1746 he gave the Point of Pines containing 500 acres, surveyed at his request by Henry Yonge Dept. Surveyor to John P. Grimke, who had married his daughter Ann, also several slaves.

He left the plantation on which he lived consisting of 500 acres, it being a part of the 907 acres situated on Edisto Island which was devised him by his father in his last will, to his wife, Mary, during her widowhood. He also gave in his will a plantation of 200 acres to Susannah Grimball, his daughter, it being a part of the tract of 730 acres the balance of which tract he had given to his daughter Ann Grimke.

Property

  • In 1732 Paul Grimball received a grant for 1590 acres on Edisto Island[5] The same land, 1590 acres, signed over by Joshua Grimball and Thomas Grimball, devised it to his son John Grimball Apr 1751.[6]
  • 500 acres on the South Edisto River, conveyed to Paul Grimball by Richard Ashe, 9-10 Nov 1750.[7]
