Biography

Southern Cross of Honor Richard Griffith was a veteran of the Mexican-American War, Colonel of the 12th Mississippi Infantry and a Brigadier General in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Savage's Station during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign.[1]

"During the Peninsula campaign, and up to the seven days' fight in front of Richmond, General Griffith, of Jackson, Mississippi, commanded the brigade. On the morning of the Battle of Savage's Station, while we were driving the enemy before us along the railroad track, he was struck by a shell from one of the enemy's guns - fell from his horse and died in a few hours. A good man, a true patriot, and a gallant officer."[2]

Husband of Sallie Ann Eliza Whitfield. Final resting place in Greenwood Cemetery, Jackson, Mississippi.[3]
