Henry Gray (or Grey), Knt., 2nd Count of Tancarville, Lord of Powis, Chamberlain of Normandy, was born about 1418/9 (aged 1 1/2 years in 1421, aged 7 in 1425). He was the son and heir of John Gray (or Grey), K.G., of Heaton, Northumberland and Joan de Cherleton, elder daughter and co-heiress of Edward Cherleton and Eleanor Holand.[1][2]
Henry was knighted by John of Lancaster, Duke of Bedford,[1] on 19 May 1426.[3] He was later in the retinue of the Duke of Bedford in the French Wars of 1435.[1] On 5 December 1441, he proved his age in Shropshire and had livery of his inherited lands.[2]
Henry married Antigone of Gloucester, illegitimate daughter of Humphrey of Lancaster, K.G., Duke of Gloucester[2] (son of King Henry IV) and an unknown mistress, after 3 January 1434/5 (grant of his marriage).[1] They had two sons and one daughter:
Richard, Knt., Lord Grey of Powis,[1] born 5 November 1436 at Pontesbury, died 17 December 1466, married Margaret Touchet (or Audley), widow of Sir Roger Vaughan[2]
Elizabeth, born about 1440, died after 1501, married Sir Roger Kynaston[1]
Henry lost his earldom in October 1449, when the Duke of Somerset surrendered the castle of Tancarville to the French.[1]
Sir Henry Grey died 13 January 1449/50[1] at Guines Castle, Calais, France and he was buried in the Chapel of Our Lady in the Cathedral church of Canterbury, Kent.[4] His widow remarried to Jean d'Amancy (or d'Amancier), Esq.,[1][5]
Research Notes
Humphrey Grey
Richardson in MCA and RA gives no further information, but the Cracroft website says Humphrey married Eleanor Touchet, a daughter who does not appear in RA in the TUCHET 15 family: "Eleanor Touchet (b. c. 1438; d. 14...), mar. her second cousin once removed Humphrey Grey, 2nd son of Henry Grey, 2nd Count of Tancarville, by his wife Antigone Plantagent, legitimised only dau. of Humphrey, 1st Duke of Gloucester, by his mistress and later second wife Alianore de Cobham, 3rd dau. of Sir Reynold de Cobham, de jure 3rd Baron Cobham of Sterborough (by his wife Eleanor Colepeper, dau. of Sir Thomas Colepeper, of Rayal, co. Kent), 2nd but 1st surv. son and heir by his second wife of Reynold [de Cobham], 2nd Baron Cobham of Sterborough, and had issue".
Genealogics says Humphrey did not have issue, but Welsh sources say that he had a son John, ancestor of the Vaughns of Llwydiarth.[6][7]Description of the Armorial Insignia of the Vaughans states the problem, showing a quartered shield for "umffre grae" and his wife, it seems, "merch arglwyd awdle" (girl of the Lord Audley), noting his brother certainly married such an Audley girl.[8]
Possible Daughter
Welsh Genealogies mentions another daughter of Henry: Jane or Jonet.[citation needed] "Jonet Grey daughter of Harri Grey, Lord Powys"[9] Richardson, however, does not recognize Jonet as one of his daughters.
